The first, not far from Foligno, can be reached from Perugia in less than an hour; the second, in the province of Terni, in about an hour and a half.
However, if you happen to be in the city and want to make a quick trip to the cellar without wasting the whole day, you are spoiled for choice, the hills surrounding Perugia are home to producers of great tradition and experience, not to be missed. Here are some.
Cantine Giorgio Lungarotti
Viale Giorgio Lungarotti 2, Torgiano (PG)
Phone +39 075988661
Torgiano is a denomination that needs no introduction. It is here that some of the greatest wines of the region are born, it is here that Sangiovese manages to express itself magnificently thanks to a now legendary vineyard, the Monticchio which has been the flag of Umbria in the world for decades. But not only that, Lungarotti is a must for every enthusiast, it is in fact a cellar capable of expressing an impressive average quality, both in whites and reds.
Cantina La Spina
Via Emilio Alessandrini 1, Spina (Pg)
Phone +39 0758738120
Moreno Peccia in less than a decade has managed to establish himself as one of the most solid (small) producers in the region. This is thanks to a sure hand, capable of expressing wines that are as personal as they are elegant, all characterized by an amazing relationship between quality and price. My favourites? The Eburneo, its white, and the Rosso Spina, one of those wines from which it is impossible to separate.
Cantina Goretti
Strada del Pino 4, Pila (Pg)
Phone +39 075607316
Historic cellar of the Perugian, Goretti is also worth a visit for its beautiful headquarters, a castle that dominates the small village of Pila. From Sangiovese to Sagrantino, from Merlot to Grechetto, the wines are all characterized by a modern style and an excellent relationship between quality and price.
Cantina Carini
Strada del Tegolaro, Canneto (Pg)
Phone +39 0756059495
Just north of the city, along one of the most beautiful roads in the region, Carini peeps out. A company capable of producing wines of great elegance mainly from international vines. Hence the Tegolaro, a blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon, which well represents the great potential of the area. Or the Oscano, a blend of sangiovese and gamay, which every year, harvest after harvest, enters by right among the tastiest red wines of the region.
If it is true that some of these cellars are accustomed to receiving numerous guests at any time of the year, it is also true that it is always better to call to advise of your arrival and to arrange a short tasting. Good fun.
